When the time comes for you to buy a winter coat, if you are a plus size, it can really be a difficult time. Stores usually just put all the plus size coats together and then we larger folk have to try and dig round and see what suits us. Time consuming, and irritating. How much better to know which shape coat flatters your shape before you go!
A-Line Shape or Swing Shape
This is my favourite shape of coat. It is great for us pear shaped women, it is very flattering. What it does is skim the hips, without actually highlighting them. Once that step has been taken, you can draw the eye upwards by adding a contrast color scarf. Epaulettes on the shoulders will also draw the eye away from the hips.
It doesn't matter if you are short or tall for this sort of style, it is flattering on all heights. It can be worn on casual occasions and it is easily dressed up for smart occasions. It has a great deal of flexibility and perhaps that is why it is so very popular. I love it!
Belted Coats
These are great if you have a large bust. You can highlight a slimmer waist with the belt. This means that there will be a slight flare on the bottom and this will help balance you out. Even though you are wrapped up, all will know you have a good figure going on under there!
As for accessories, wear a scarf that is a similar color to your coat because you want the coat to highlight your waist. Brightly coloured gloves are a good distraction, away from your bust and to your hands.
Asymmetric Style
If you are a round shape, sometimes called an apple shape (what I basically mean is someone with a bigger tummy), then your two best ploys are distraction and avoidance. You need to avoid double breasted, as this will not flatter you.
Asymmetrical is good, and anything with a high waist will flatter your figure much more. A-line coats can be your friend, skimming your body.
As for distraction, you want to keep the eye away from your tummy as much as you can. Try bold scarves, to distract the eye upwards. If you want to highlight legs, then zany tights can do this. Add some funky boots and you will end up looking great.
